Ian Barry, a masterful winemaker with a keen eye for blending the experimental with the classic, has taken the Finger Lakes wine region by storm with his exceptional wines. Together with his father Ken, the two founded Barry Family Cellars in 2011, a small-batch winery specializing in vinifera wines with a fearless approach to experimenting with hybrid varietals, all of which are organically grown in the Finger Lakes region. Ken adds a personal touch by handling the label illustrations for their wines.
In a recent stroke of luck, Ian seized the opportunity to co-ferment four red varieties grown in the Finger Lakes region, blending Blaufrankisch, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon into a wine that is strikingly similar to a refined Pinot Noir from Burgundy, despite the absence of Pinot grapes. The result is the perfect “bistro red”, as Ian himself calls it.
